On Friday 4th of March at 7pm Mayo hosted its first ever teach meet. Organised by Hassan, Caroline and Vivienne and held in Mayo Education Centre just one week after the CESI conference Teach Meet in Dublin, the crowds came from far and wide to attend the Castlebar Meeting. Hassan had been to our school for the Raspberry Jam back in December and when talking with Mrs Mangan asked us to showcase in what was to be Ireland FIRST #tmkids event. We set up in Castlebar at 6.30 and as the teachers filled into the meeting room, we were getting our laptops at the ready and our projects set up. Mrs Mangan had to go into the room to talk to all the teachers before they came out for the breakout (coffee break!) and then, the crowds came up the stairs and met us! Everyone was really nice and really cool, they all tried and tested out the things we had to show even one principal did 10 pushups which was in Cian and Camerons QR coded PE lesson while nearly all of them did squats and star jumps – they were great fun! We had 4 zones to show them different things, Cian and Cameron had QR codes showing them how easy it was to make them online, print them and use them…no major rocket science involved. They showed them the PE lesson we all made a few weeks ago for our own PE class and some maths, religion and english lessons and essays we wrote. next to them were Padraic and Mikey who were demonstrating the MAkey Makey and their latest project, an operation game coded through scratch! It was great fun and quite easy to make so I think there will be a board game company going out of business soon as lots of teachers are ready to go make them. They also showed the teachers their banana piano which everyone loved trying out!
The next table had myself and Nora showing the Raspberry pi with the camera attachment and telling them all about what was on the pi and how you could use it. I showed people my new website which I am making…..reminds me I forgot to tell Mags Amond that she gave me the idea for its name!!! Nora was great at telling everyone about the pi. On our last table Eva, Anna and Tiernan were showing everyone scratch, they had projects made, books and workcards on the table and some handouts as well.
We had an amazing evening and it was sooo cool seeing everyone taking part – teachers are cooler than they let us think!!! Dont just take my word for it here is some things people said about us on twitter and there are even more on Mrs Mangans twitter feed! Thank you Mrs Mangan for bringing us, to all the teachers for being super working with us and to Hassan and his team for giving us the green light to do #tmkids – hopefully we will become trendsetters and lots of teachmeets will have a breakout like it!
