Eu code week 2016

Aer lingus plane

Our plane to Brussels

On Saturday we went to Megadojo in Limerick. Cian and I entered the scratch-a-thon. We made a game on time travel. The cat met a few historic people and became a historian. We did’nt win but that was alright because everyone thought it was good anyway. Mum was doing a raspberry pi thing. Then on Monday we did scratch at school. On Tuesday we went on a plane to Brussels. It was an aer lingus plane.

When we got to Brussels we took the bus to the Eu Parliment where we got to teach the MEPs how to use scratch. Padraic and I showed them our website.

Showing our farmsafety4kids.net website

I showed a few MEPs how to draw and change costumes on scratch and how to use the effects.  On Wednesday we practiced our workshops at school and got ready for our skycademy. We also had our Coder Dojo. We have coding buddies who we teach who to code.

Coderdojo

Our Coderdojo

Coderdojo is on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30. Everyone who goes loves it. It is very fun. Then on Thursday we had our skycademy. My workshop got moved to Friday with everyone else’s. The Skycademy was great ! We showed where we would launch the balloon and where it would land. Then we told everyone. We had skycademy recruits. Mags Amond and Hassan where recruits as well as the entire school. Everyone had a good time. We made binary

Then on Friday we did our workshops . Mine was  called Beginners guide to scratching maths with things in your kitchen. I was doing it at mozfest as well on Sunday 30th October. We did our workshops with the little class. I loved Anna  and Eva’s workshop about witch goes shopping. We got to make our own animation of the poem on scratch. Mine had the witch freaking out when the shop had nothing she needed and she got arrested because she was in a normal shop casting spells. It was really really funny. Mikey and Padraic’s story was great because we got to make a quiz. We had partners . Mine was Dominick. The story was about a haunted house. Dominick got the people to go on the haunted house ride and walk around it. Cameron and Cian’s spooky sounds on Scratch was very funny. They got us to download songs and music on spookysoundtrack.com . Then we got the background to play it while sprites moved and danced and screamed and loads more stuff like that. It was so much fun. Then we did my one. Everyone loved it.  It was a great EU code week! Thank you to everyone who came to our skycademy and To everyone involved including Mags Amond.

  Mozfest 2016 in Ravensbourne collage.

Thursday the 28th I went to London to go to Mozfest to do my workshop. It was late when we got to the hotel so we went to sleep (mum and I). We got on another aer lingus plane to London. It was not long. On Saturday we went to google in London before going to Mozfest. At Mozfest we had to set up. ( The youngest did’nt ) before lunch. Then after it was set up we could go to look around. I met Elise ( Girls 2 Geeks) and Joshua . We got to get hot chocolate. Then after a while of getting everything ready we got to go and get dinner. We went to Pizza Express. It was nice. We went to the 02 for a look around. Then we went back before going back to the hotel early. On the way we went to Tesco express to get tinfoil. I got M&Ms. Then on Saturday we went to a Minecraft Pi workshop where we programmed minecraft to make a maze. We changed the maze blocks (stone) to TNT. Then we watched it explode! We had 5 minutes left so we got to make a tree-house or something.

Minecraft pi

After that we walked around with Elise and Joshua. We got some dinosaurs that said @mozfest16 on them. After Mum and I went to the Gamehub where I made a person/sprite then put it in a game that I programmed. After that we went to the art level. I got to use a snapchat filter and take a photo. Then Elise and Joshua came with us for some lunch. We went to Five guys. We could’nt stay long because Elise’s workshop was on soon. Then Mum and I met Saoirse and her Mum at the robot workshop before going to Elise’s sonic pi workshop. It was fun because we made our own spooky sounds. Then we had to leave to go to Matilda the musical. It was funny. They programmed the light effects. Orla left to go home but Saoirse stayed.

On Sunday the last day of Mozfest  we went to Joshua’s workshop. My one was after it. I went on a pi at the back doing my code for the workshop. Then when it was over, I got ready for my one. Loads of people came. Elise, Joshua, Polly, Saoirse and Mum helped. It was good workshop. Then we went and got lunch. When we got back we to hot chocolate. We got to go to the VR room. Then we went to Elise’s workshop again . This time I helped a guy wearing a pink raspberry pi t-shirt. After that we went to the astro pi workshop before we packed up. We all had a great time.

Scór 2016 – Congratulations Padraic!

We took part in Scór last night in Hollymount Hall. We had our 8 hand group entered in the Figure Dancing – Nora, Tiernan, Mikey, Eva, Padraic, Aoibheann, Cameron and Anna. They danced to the Sweets of May and did a great job representing the school! Well done to you all and we will miss Nora and Tiernan next year – after three years dancing for the school, last night was their last time in Scór as they move onto to secondary school next year.

Anna Farragher represented us in the Solo SInging where she sang The Star of the County Down. Nerves were a factor but we think she did a great job!

Next on stage for us was Padraic Godwin with his poem – the Lotto Song. Padraic had the audience in stitches as he recited his poem.

We had an all girls music group this year, Anna, Eva, Nora and Aoibheann performed The Sally Gardens and Terry Teehans Polka. They too did  a smashing job and rounded off a great nights participation by Cloghans Hill.

At the end of the night, the results were in!!! We had lots of anxious faces awaiting them. We were over the moon and the roof nearly came off the hall when Padraic was announced as the winner in the recitation! Well done Padraic, we are very proud of you and our very first Scór win!!!! Well done to all the pupils and thank you to Sharon who helped the music group and Catherine who does our Irish dancing. Another big thanks to our supporters, chief among them Cian, Karen and Jack and all the parents who came to cheer us on!!

We wish Padraic all the best in the county final on April 16th in Breaffy! IMG_9859 IMG_9858

Teach meet 2016- A students view!

On Friday we went to Mayo teach meet 2016. It was held in the Mayo education centre in Castlebar.

When we arrived in the door ,  the home felt homey and I wasn’t nervous anymore because I knew what I was doing.  I was showcasing how to take photos on the Raspberry Pi and also how to save those photos.  The teachers were the nicest ( but not as nice as Mrs Mangan ).  Chris was the man who gave us the BB8  to play with and Mags showed us how to make glowies.  All in all , the whole classroom had an amazing time.    Nora.

Now you know how fun it is, why don’t you check out the other students ideas and thoughts about the fantastic evening full of fun, teachers and exercise  ( QR codes with PE stuff on them).

Thanks for reading : Nora

Sightsavers Visit to our Junior Painter of the Year Regional Winners

We were delighted to welcome Teresa Murray from Sightsavers Ireland to our school this week to meet with the prize winners from Junior Painter. Teresa spoke to us all about the work of Sightsavers and the different things they are doing as they aproach 2030 with goals to reduce unnecessary blindness for people in the third world. She told us how easy it is to spread eye infections using dirty water and using the person before you’s water when they have an infection. After a very informative talk, Teresa presented Tiernan, Dominick and Cian with their certificates and Aoibheann with her special merit award. We all got participation certificates too.

Thank you Teresa for coming all the way from Dublin to see us.

We got a lovely email from Teresa in Sightsavers Ireland this morning. Sightsavers run an art competition which we enter every year and this year, she told us that we had 4 prize winners in the school!

Her emailed told us the following!!!

“Cloghans Hill NS has great reason to celebrate:

Junior Painter Awards – Regional Winners 2016 – Ulster/Connaught

Dominick Keaveney for his painting “When I grow up, I want to build a better world, like Steve from Minecraft”
Tiernan Mangan for his painting “In 2030, I want to be a footballer”
Cian Mangan for his painting “I want a world of wonder: colour or monochrome, sight or none: a better world for us all”
And a Judges’ Special Commendation for

Aoibheann Mangan for her painting “2030: a world of magical creatures and colours, where everything feels as good as it looks”
We invite Dominick, Tiernan, Cian and Aoibheann along with their teachers and families to our awards’ day in Dublin on April 7th. At the awards’ day, the regional winners will receive their ‘toolbox’ prizes from ReCreate Ireland. It is a great day out, when we also announce our three National Awards – perhaps Cloghan’s Hill will take home a cash prize from The Irish Times and membership of ReCreate? It is also a day where we can make our young artists feel special and show them how much we appreciate them. I will be writing to you and the other winners with details of this event in the second week of February.”
Teresa will be calling to our school on Tuesday morning next at 9 am and we are inviting anyone who wishes to meet her and hear all about the great work done by sightsavers to come in and meet her and our artists!
Well done to the winners and to all who entered in the school the lessons you learnt and appreciation you got for blindness in the third world will stand to you all for the rest of your lives.

It was a brilliant day. I would like to do it again but  not working so we can look around all day. If it had more free stuff for kids it would be better. I was cross because only some stands where giving out free stuff for kids. I still had a good time. I would like to have gone to the Ice-cream van. The end.

Eircom Junior Spider Award for www.farmsafety4kids.net

Padraic and Aoibheann were yesterday announced as winners of the Group Project of the eircom Junior Spider Awards for their project www.farmsafety4kids.net.

They went to Dublin with Mrs Mangan and Cian and Cameron went too. On the train they met Inver National school and the children from the Gaelscoil in Claremorris. When they got to Dublin they went to Facebook HQ in a mini bus taxi. In Facebook HQ they got to do lots of cool stuff like walking a tightrope, face painting, balloon making, a wind tunnel paper grab and a photo booth.  The photo booth was the best fun! Our teacher met our friends in St Peters in Bray and their teacher went in the photo booth with her!! The big kids from secondary school thought they were the coolest teachers ever…..!!!!

After a picnic lunch we had to go to the big room where the awards were to be presented. Mrs Mangan was filming the awards ceremony and she got such a shock and surprise  that she dropped the ipad onto her lap! We were amazed to win, its such an honour! Thanks to Eircom, to Facebook HQ, to all the junior spiders team and of course to everyone we met for such a great day!
