Credit Union Art

Well done to all our pupils who entered the Credit Union Art competition – we don’t know how the poor judges picked their winners as everyone’s was so creative and colourful this year! We have had some winners and their names and masterpieces are below – prize giving is on Saturday December the 9th at 4pm in Claremorris Town Hall for those that can make it! Once again well done to all who entered!

Science Week 2017 – The Raft Challenge

This years senior class science challenge was to build a raft that could float and hold as many marbles as possible. The only materials they could use were lollipop sticks and rubber bands. We had great fun experimenting with different designs in school before the challenge in the McWilliam with all the other schools from South Mayo. Our two teams did really well and their floats held alot of marbles one team being very close to the winning score of 31 marbles!  Well done everyone!

EU Code week and Space Week collide!

This week is both EU code week (so big it gets a fortnight!) and Space Week 2017. Today we had a visit from BB8 and a lego We.Do kit. We worked in three core groups today.

Group 1 – coded BB8 through a maze – like a moon landing!

Group 2 – guided a astronaut through a maze of boxes to find a special light up box.

Group 3 – build Milo the Space rover with the Lego We.Do kit.

All our groups will move through tasks and challenges all week long relating to space and coding! Watch this space!

Pairead Reading

We have started Paired reading this year. Its a little like reading buddies but we have alot more structure on how it works. Pupils are paired together a reader and a listener who has to help the reader when they are stuck on a word. We are using the Pause, prompt, praise method of helping and all our listeners have been trained in how to use it.

If you would like to do paired reading at home heres a link to some ideas on how to start off: https://www.education.ie/en/Schools-Colleges/Services/National-Educational-Psychological-Service-NEPS-/NEPS-Guides/Reading-and-Dyslexia/Reading-and-Dyslexia-Shared-Paired-Reading-At-Home.pdf

Goodbye Sharon

We were very sad at the end of September, we said goodbye to our wonderful SNA Sharon McCabe. Sharon had been with us for over 2 years but is moving off to become a teacher doing the Hibernia course. We know she will be an amazing teacher and we hope she comes back to visit! Thank you Sharon for being so good to us.
