Cycle Safety Day – Castlebar 2016

On Thursday May 19th our 4th, 5th and 6th class got to take part in the  Mayo Co Co Road Safety Day run in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership. Up first there was a bus safety demo where the pupils learned all about safety both on board  a bus and as a pedestrian around the bus.

After this, the team took to the testing room for a road safety written test for cyclists. There was lots of tough questions including road positions, helmet safety, signals to use when cycling and visibility questions.

With the written test complete, the teams took to their bikes and after fixing their helmets and having them inspected, it was time to take to the streets of Castlebar, safely shadowed by Gardaí and cycle safety personnel. The girls formed Cloghans Hill Team 1 and the boys team 2. As the teams rode around the town, they were scored on their safe cycling. First to set off were the girls who arrived safely back with a very impressive score of 18/20. Next to set off were the boys, they too did an excellent job scoring 18/20.

when they street cycle was over, the teams were able to spend time cycling on the GMIT track and even got a chance to check out a paracycle.

We would like to thank all those involved in running the event, we had a great day!

Well done to 4th. 5th and 6th class who are in the top 3 in Both leaderboards again this round. We were 3rd place in the Mastery Challenge PPEP and 1st place in the Hustle boards Challenge.

This is an amazing achievement two cups in a row! Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 14.43.45

Scores have now been erased back to zero for cup 3 which will be the hardest part of the challenge for us! We are  nearly all working between 2 and 3 class levels above the classes we are in  and the maths is getting harder and harder! AND not only that but Cup 3 is dependent on holiday maths now!

Well done to our neighbours Lehinch NS who were 2nd in the Mastery Challenge this month having just joined Learnstorm – well done to Muinteoir Sheila and her crew! There must be some seriously good mathematicians around South Mayo!!!

Well done also to Mikey and Aoibheann who were both top 3 finishers in the individual challenges and we are delighted that every pupil taking part in Cloghans Hill is in the top 100 in the country! Well done to you all!!! Keep up the hard work!

Scór 2016 – Congratulations Padraic!

We took part in Scór last night in Hollymount Hall. We had our 8 hand group entered in the Figure Dancing – Nora, Tiernan, Mikey, Eva, Padraic, Aoibheann, Cameron and Anna. They danced to the Sweets of May and did a great job representing the school! Well done to you all and we will miss Nora and Tiernan next year – after three years dancing for the school, last night was their last time in Scór as they move onto to secondary school next year.

Anna Farragher represented us in the Solo SInging where she sang The Star of the County Down. Nerves were a factor but we think she did a great job!

Next on stage for us was Padraic Godwin with his poem – the Lotto Song. Padraic had the audience in stitches as he recited his poem.

We had an all girls music group this year, Anna, Eva, Nora and Aoibheann performed The Sally Gardens and Terry Teehans Polka. They too did  a smashing job and rounded off a great nights participation by Cloghans Hill.

At the end of the night, the results were in!!! We had lots of anxious faces awaiting them. We were over the moon and the roof nearly came off the hall when Padraic was announced as the winner in the recitation! Well done Padraic, we are very proud of you and our very first Scór win!!!! Well done to all the pupils and thank you to Sharon who helped the music group and Catherine who does our Irish dancing. Another big thanks to our supporters, chief among them Cian, Karen and Jack and all the parents who came to cheer us on!!

We wish Padraic all the best in the county final on April 16th in Breaffy! IMG_9859 IMG_9858

Our visit to Launchpad at NUIG.

We were super lucky last week to get the chance to visit Mary Carty in the Blackstone Launchpad at NUIG. The Blackstone Launchpad is experiential entrepreneurship program open to students, alumni, staff and faculty; offering coaching, ideation and venture creation support. We went to visit Mary and some of her team as part of our work with Bizzworld and the Junior Entrepreneur scheme. It was great to meet Mary, an inspirational lady in the STEM and technology start up world, she is co-founder of the amazing outbox incubator Program which begin in London last summer with 115 11-22 year old girls including local girl, Cliona McGreal. Mary is the Managing Director of Blackstone Launchpad in NUIG now.

The pupils had a chance to speak with some entrepreneurs in the Launchpad all about their business ideas and heard lots of strategies on how to complete our project as well as how these people got around obstacles in their way when starting out. We heard from Edel Browne who won the BT young scientist a few years ago with an idea on how to help people with parkinsons follow a laser spot when walking and helping them to focus and wobble less when walking. She has now got her very own company!!

We also spoke to Jason who is setting up a service type business so he explained how he was doing this and what the difference between service and product type business is. It was great to listen to his suggestions for moving forward with our project were too!

We had a great day there and are inspired to move on, don’t just take my word for it, here is what the pupils had to say about it!!!

“I loved the lesson in how you dont let anything stop you from getting where you want to go if the first test of your idea doesn’t work, change it and try again!” – Tiernan G

“We got really cool copies that we are going to use for our company, we felt like real workers with these as there was a cool space to keep your pen when your on the go” – Mikey.

“I liked hearing how business people start making things at home using old things, we can all start something ourselves with what we have at home” Eva

“My favourite bit was Jasons STOP analogy, Sit, Think, Orientate and Plan – we will remember it whenever things aren’t going to plan” – Anna.

” I liked Edels idea it was amazing its amazing to hear how sensors like that can help someones quality of life” – Padraic.

“I loved the ideas they gave us to mock up our products it was great hearing how Edel and Jason had to do mock ups and Edels first one didn’t work at all and look how she is doing now after trying and trying again” Aoibheann

“”I learned that you should never stop and always keep trying” Cameron

“The Launchpad is really cool, I loved the chairs and benches and the whole area was super!” Cian

So there you have it a huge thumbs up from the Cloghans Hill team to the Launchpad crew, we really hope to come back and visit you again soon – and we will hopefully have our very own product with us!!!! Thank you Mary, Edel and Jason and all who are a part of Launchpad, the students of NUIG are lucky to have you!

I’m A Scientist

On Tuesday the 16th, we were very lucky to take part in the Scientist for a Day in NUIG run by Kitchen Chemistry, Cell Explorers and Eco Explorers.

The children had the most amazing day. In the morning, they did Kitchen Chemistry where they did forensic science, finger printing and working with Luminol. They electroplated copper coins turning them gold and silver. They blew up volcanos and even made toothpaste for an elephant and a cloud. They got to experiment with liquid nitrogen destroying leaves and shrinking and re inflating balloons.

After lunch, the had cell explorers where they worked with DNA and its structures even getting to extract DNA from a banana to bring home!

IMG_9164 IMG_9154 IMG_9153 IMG_9152 IMG_9151

After the big lunch break, it was time for Eco Exporers with the Bug dr from RTE! The children learnt all about reptiles and insects and got to get up close and personal with all sorts of creepy crawlies!!!!

A massive thank you to NUIG for hosting this great initiative and thanks to all the groups who ran the show – we really enjoyed every minute of it!
