Féach ar an obair a rinne muid ar Bia agus Deochanna – have a look at the work we did on Food and Drink in Irish last week! Click on the link to see our power point presentation!
Last week we did alot of work on healthy eating, the food pyramid and menu planning. We paid special attention to our food in school – our Lunchboxes!!!!
Everyone had super healthy lunches all week and to celebrate our new found knowledge, we invited the parents to school for a healthy lunch made by ourselves.
It took alot of planning, we had to plan what we would give them thinking of our rules about 5 a day and the food pyramid. We also thought of the things we might be able to have for lunch that they might not think pf giving us – cous cous was the top winner there!!
All the parents had a lovely lunch and we did two power point presentations on healthy eating for them 1 in Irish and 1 in english!
NOW, we turn the tables on the parents….next week, they are going to cook for us!!!! We can’t wait!!!
Today we signed up to learn Google CS Club with Scratch. The older classes know how to use scratch so they are all getting a buddy to mentor in CS Club! We are all very excited. It kick off next Friday – we have passports printed, laminated and ready to go for all the little buddies, we can’t wait to get going!!! Here is a little taster of what we are going to be doing!
Yesterday, we went to Godwins farm on a special farm safety mission. We had some guests with us who will reveal a big farm safety message with us in the new year – watch this space for news!
Many thanks to our secret guests and to the Godwin’s for letting us visit their farm and to Mrs Godwin for her amazing chocolate brownie cake, ice cream and the very welcome warm cups of tea!
This year Mayo Science Festival hosted a spaghetti building challenge in the McWilliam Park Hotel Claremorris. The challenge was to build the tallest tower that could support a marshmallow for ten seconds. It had to be a free standing tower (not attached to anything) and the materials we were allowed to use were: 20 pieces of spaghetti, a marshmallow, 1 metre of masking tape and a scissors. We sent two teams to the competition this year. Team 1: Nora, Tiernan, Mikey and Eva and team 2 were: Padraic, Aoibheann, Anna and Cameron. Both teams put in a mighty effort on the day and were delighted to build marshmallow supporting structures!!
Well done to both teams and thank you to Mrs Farragher for driving us in with Mrs. Mangan and to all involved in organising it!
Congratulations to Padraic and Aoibheann in 4th class who won the Boots Maternity and Infant Magazine Young Achiever of the Year award in Dublin last week. The duo won their prize for their dedication in setting up, running and promoting farm safety through their website www.farmsafety4kids.net. Well done both to you both!
Today we went on a nature walk / Autumn Scavenger hunt. We went on one this time last year as well so it was amazing to note how despite the bad summer, there were fewer signs of Autumn in our locality this year than there was last year. It was hard to find a large collection of multi coloured leaves.
We got ready for our nature walk by
- Learning the rules of the road, and the rules of the school on tour.
- Planning what we were looking for, wanted to see and how we should observe things.
- We got into groups
- We put on our reflective jackets and set off!!!
We found lots of signs of Autumn, Here are some of them
Red leaves, green leaves, orange leaves, yellow leaves and brown leaves.
We found berries – blackberries and elder berries.
Tree fruits – Beech nuts, pine cones, fir cones, chesnuts and acorns.
Leaves from different trees which we used charts to find –
Alder, beech, hawthorn, oak, sycamore, horse chestnut, hazel, pine, ash and a fir tree.
We also found grass, ferns, flowers, moss, bark and twigs.
We had a great time!
We went to lidl for breakfast.I had a pancake, yoghurt and a strawberry. We went to the stand 379. We worked there for a while helping the HSA and IFA with their circle the dangers worksheets for kids and showing our website www.farmsafety4kids.net. We helped little kids and showed them the website. For Lunch we had supermacs. I had curry chips. We walked around and we saw hurley stands. We went to the RTE tent. Then we went to Tesco and got free slices of pizza. We saw lots of tractors. We saw lots of different balloons floating in the sky. We went to the ESB tent. We played games and got free stuff. I got a ruler, pens and a keyring/measuring tape. Then we went to King crisps. We found a golden potatoe .We got packets of crisps. We went to corrib oil stand. We meet Anna May McHugh. We allso saw the tree stand. It was very mucky. We went to Inovation stand. We met Alma Jordan from Agrikids there, showcasing and selling her farm safety children books and clothing range. Then we went home. On the way home we went to Athlone for food. It was 9 o’clock when we got home. I fell asleep at 11.30.
It was a brilliant day. I would like to do it again but not working so we can look around all day. If it had more free stuff for kids it would be better. I was cross because only some stands where giving out free stuff for kids. I still had a good time. I would like to have gone to the Ice-cream van. The end.

Today we have been learning and working on QR Codes. A QR Code is a type of barcode that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. We are creating them on the mac and using iphone and i pads to read them. You can use them on any internet devide to create them and read them with apps on most tablets and some laptops that have cameras. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text you want students to read, websites, or video.
Today we made QR codes for websites:
This is the code for our school website:
This is the code for Padraic and Aoibheanns Farm Safety Website:
Next we made QR codes to hide text – we made a treasure hunt for the infant class. It was great fun they had to scan codes to find clues and eventually they found the treasure – a lovely stickers art kit for them to use for art this week!
Finally, we used QR codes to make our KWL chart for the work we are going to be doing on Norman castles this month. Click on the tab and see it!
