Science Week Rocket Workshop

On the Friday of Science week, the seniors went to the Science Ireland Rocket Workshop with Declan in the Mayo Museum of Country Life. There we learned lost of things about rockets, launches, air pressure and and fuel! We even got to build our own rockets which were amazing. We met our twitter friends from Craggagh NS there and we all had a great time launching our rockets! We were super proud our two teams came 1st and 3rd in the launch challenge, we may have some budding aeronautical engineers  or Astronauts in the making!

Here is a video of how our launches went!

I’m A Scientist

On Tuesday the 16th, we were very lucky to take part in the Scientist for a Day in NUIG run by Kitchen Chemistry, Cell Explorers and Eco Explorers.

The children had the most amazing day. In the morning, they did Kitchen Chemistry where they did forensic science, finger printing and working with Luminol. They electroplated copper coins turning them gold and silver. They blew up volcanos and even made toothpaste for an elephant and a cloud. They got to experiment with liquid nitrogen destroying leaves and shrinking and re inflating balloons.

After lunch, the had cell explorers where they worked with DNA and its structures even getting to extract DNA from a banana to bring home!

After the big lunch break, it was time for Eco Exporers with the Bug dr from RTE! The children learnt all about reptiles and insects and got to get up close and personal with all sorts of creepy crawlies!!!!

A massive thank you to NUIG for hosting this great initiative and thanks to all the groups who ran the show – we really enjoyed every minute of it!

Come Dine With US!

Last week we did alot of work on healthy eating, the food pyramid and menu planning. We paid special attention to our food in school – our Lunchboxes!!!!

Everyone had super healthy lunches all week and to celebrate our new found knowledge, we invited the parents to school for a healthy lunch made by ourselves.

It took alot of planning, we had to plan what we would give them thinking of our rules about 5 a day and the food pyramid. We also thought of the things we might be able to have for lunch that they might not think pf giving us – cous cous was the top winner there!!

All the parents had a lovely lunch and we did two power point presentations on healthy eating for them 1 in Irish and 1 in english!

NOW, we turn the tables on the parents….next week, they are going to cook for us!!!!  We can’t wait!!!

Our School Farm Safety Walk

Yesterday, we went to Godwins farm on a special farm safety mission. We had some guests with us who will reveal a big farm safety message with us in the new year – watch this space for news!

Many thanks to our secret guests and to the Godwin’s for letting us visit their farm and to Mrs Godwin for her amazing chocolate brownie cake, ice cream and the very welcome warm cups of tea!

OUR EGGSPERMENT

Today we did  an eggsperiment.

You will need some egg shells,.

A glass, cup

A selection of soft-drinks {e.g. cola squash a juice-drinks, fresh fruit juice and water.

What do you do?

We put the egg shells into different cups.

then we put in the drinks. We used Cola, 7up, fizzy orange, water, squash and orange juice.

Now we wait 24 hours.

and see what happens…….

The next day…..

The egg shell in the water remains as it was no cracks, peeling, discolouration or weakening of the shell.

The Eggshell in Water Result

The Eggshell in Water Result

The Eggshell in the Squash – this result really gave me a shock! we thought as you mix this with so much water it couldn’t be bad for you! Well the shell was really peeled.

The Orange Juice Result: We were very surprised to see that the orange juice made the egg shell peel, it felt bumpy and weaker than when it went in. This showed us that there are a lot of sugars in fruit juice even when the label says no added sugar, there are naturally occurring sugars in fruit – don’t forget to wash your teeth!!!

The soda team – the results from the fizzy drinks did not really surprise us. The staining of the cola however was quite dramatic! Fizzy drinks made the eggs peel, crack with weakness and discolour in the case of the Cola. We have ruled that we shall only drink fizzy drinks on special occasions!!!!

Science Week Fun

Today, we went to the Mac William for one of our fun experiments. It was called Toothpick and jelly tot challenge. We had 200 toothpicks, and 50 jelly tots. We had to build a structure out of these. The teams were Tiernan, Nora and Shakira. The other team was Padraic, Cian and Cameron. Aoibheann was not there because she had to go to the hospital. Our teacher Mrs. Mangan brought us in her car. When we got there we had to wait for a while for them to open the doors. After a while the let us in!! They were so kind to give us sweeties! They were delicious!!! Now we got started on our structures and we had 40 minutes. The structure had to hold 1 full bag of sugar… 1kg. Both of our teams held  the sugar without failure! We were very proud of ourselves, but unfortunately we didn’t win!! 🙁 we had GREAT FUN!!! Thank you to the Mac William and All the Staff and Mrs. Mangan for bringing us.

chocco rocks.

Today at school we did a  chocco rocks experiment . It was fun at the end.

At the end we got to eat chocolate ,so did the Infants.

There was different rocks.

A meteorite with fusion crust.

A ‘chondritic’ meteorite .

An iron meteortite .

An igneous rock from an explosive eruption.

An igneous rock that cooled slowly as a magma.

An igneous rock that cooled quickly as a magma.

Here a is the chocolates we used: Aero, Dairy Milk,Brownie, Rocky Road,Crispy Bites and Milky way.

We all loved it.

There were six plates.

We all had to guess which rock was ours.

It was great fun.

The Infants  got the description of the chocolate.

By Padraic Godwin and Aoibheann  mangan Rang 3

Guess which chocolate is which rock ?

Lava Lamps

It’s Science Week!!!! And to celebrate we did some experiments. One of them, was a Lava Lamp!! We made one each. What we did was we got a plastic bottle, oil, water, food colouring, Alka-Seltzer’s glitter… you don’t have to get glitter!! So what we did was we got a jug of water and poured 50 mils into each bottle. Then we filled the rest with oil, nearly to the top, but not quite!!  So when we did that we added the food colouring. When we did… It just sat at the bottom of the bottle!! We gave it a tiny shake. After we gave it a shake, We quickly broke an Alka-Seltzer in half  and popped both halves into the bottle… we had to close the lid very quickly, so that the mixture didn’t go everywhere and make a HUGE mess!! It looked AMAZING!!!! You can easily try this at home and have lot’s of fun just like us!!

World Tree Day

Today was world tree day. We got a free tree – an Alder tree -from sammy the squirrel and the tree council! Thanks guys! When it arrived in a brown envelope there was a letter telling us how to take care of it and grow it!

It it was a little bent from the posting but after a few days in water it was a little straighter! Our next task was to select where we should grow it! We questioned a few areas based on light, shade, space and being safe from running children;-)

in in the end we selected a lovely spot in an area we may theme into a mini woodland area (if our next tree growing experiment goes well)

shakira as the oldest pupil and. Jack as the youngest planted the tree! We will all keep an eye on it as it grows!
