Science Week Rocket Workshop

On the Friday of Science week, the seniors went to the Science Ireland Rocket Workshop with Declan in the Mayo Museum of Country Life. There we learned lost of things about rockets, launches, air pressure and and fuel! We even got to build our own rockets which were amazing. We met our twitter friends from Craggagh NS there and we all had a great time launching our rockets! We were super proud our two teams came 1st and 3rd in the launch challenge, we may have some budding aeronautical engineers  or Astronauts in the making!

Here is a video of how our launches went!

I’m A Scientist

On Tuesday the 16th, we were very lucky to take part in the Scientist for a Day in NUIG run by Kitchen Chemistry, Cell Explorers and Eco Explorers.

The children had the most amazing day. In the morning, they did Kitchen Chemistry where they did forensic science, finger printing and working with Luminol. They electroplated copper coins turning them gold and silver. They blew up volcanos and even made toothpaste for an elephant and a cloud. They got to experiment with liquid nitrogen destroying leaves and shrinking and re inflating balloons.

After lunch, the had cell explorers where they worked with DNA and its structures even getting to extract DNA from a banana to bring home!

After the big lunch break, it was time for Eco Exporers with the Bug dr from RTE! The children learnt all about reptiles and insects and got to get up close and personal with all sorts of creepy crawlies!!!!

A massive thank you to NUIG for hosting this great initiative and thanks to all the groups who ran the show – we really enjoyed every minute of it!

Come Dine With US!

Last week we did alot of work on healthy eating, the food pyramid and menu planning. We paid special attention to our food in school – our Lunchboxes!!!!

Everyone had super healthy lunches all week and to celebrate our new found knowledge, we invited the parents to school for a healthy lunch made by ourselves.

It took alot of planning, we had to plan what we would give them thinking of our rules about 5 a day and the food pyramid. We also thought of the things we might be able to have for lunch that they might not think pf giving us – cous cous was the top winner there!!

All the parents had a lovely lunch and we did two power point presentations on healthy eating for them 1 in Irish and 1 in english!

NOW, we turn the tables on the parents….next week, they are going to cook for us!!!!  We can’t wait!!!

Our School Farm Safety Walk

Yesterday, we went to Godwins farm on a special farm safety mission. We had some guests with us who will reveal a big farm safety message with us in the new year – watch this space for news!

Many thanks to our secret guests and to the Godwin’s for letting us visit their farm and to Mrs Godwin for her amazing chocolate brownie cake, ice cream and the very welcome warm cups of tea!

Science Week Spaghetti Challenge

This year Mayo Science Festival hosted a spaghetti building challenge in the McWilliam Park Hotel Claremorris. The challenge was to build the tallest tower that could support a marshmallow for ten seconds. It had to be a free standing tower (not attached to anything) and the materials we were allowed to use were: 20 pieces of spaghetti, a marshmallow, 1 metre of masking tape and a scissors. We sent two teams to the competition this year. Team 1: Nora, Tiernan, Mikey and Eva and team 2 were: Padraic, Aoibheann, Anna and Cameron.  Both teams put in a mighty effort on the day and were delighted to build marshmallow supporting structures!!

Well done to both teams and thank you to Mrs Farragher for driving us in with Mrs. Mangan and to all involved in organising it!

Our Nature Walk

Today we went on a nature walk / Autumn Scavenger hunt. We went on one this time last year as well so it was amazing to note how despite the bad summer, there were fewer signs of Autumn in our locality this year than there was last year. It was hard to find a large collection of multi coloured leaves.

We  got ready for our nature walk by

  1. Learning the rules of the road, and the rules of the school on tour.
  2. Planning what we were looking for, wanted to see and how we should observe things.
  3. We got into groups
  4. We put on our reflective jackets and set off!!!

We found lots of signs of Autumn, Here are some of them

Red leaves, green leaves, orange leaves, yellow leaves and brown leaves.

We found berries – blackberries and elder berries.

Tree fruits – Beech nuts, pine cones, fir cones, chesnuts and acorns.

Leaves from different trees which we used charts to find –

Alder, beech, hawthorn, oak, sycamore, horse chestnut, hazel, pine, ash and a fir tree.

We also found grass, ferns, flowers, moss, bark and twigs.

We had a great time!

Eircom Junior Spider Award for

Padraic and Aoibheann were yesterday announced as winners of the Group Project of the eircom Junior Spider Awards for their project

They went to Dublin with Mrs Mangan and Cian and Cameron went too. On the train they met Inver National school and the children from the Gaelscoil in Claremorris. When they got to Dublin they went to Facebook HQ in a mini bus taxi. In Facebook HQ they got to do lots of cool stuff like walking a tightrope, face painting, balloon making, a wind tunnel paper grab and a photo booth.  The photo booth was the best fun! Our teacher met our friends in St Peters in Bray and their teacher went in the photo booth with her!! The big kids from secondary school thought they were the coolest teachers ever…..!!!!

After a picnic lunch we had to go to the big room where the awards were to be presented. Mrs Mangan was filming the awards ceremony and she got such a shock and surprise  that she dropped the ipad onto her lap! We were amazed to win, its such an honour! Thanks to Eircom, to Facebook HQ, to all the junior spiders team and of course to everyone we met for such a great day!

The Launch!

Last night Padraic and Aoibheann launched their website. It was great to see so many people attending the school on their big occasion. It was also wonderful to share with them the ideas behind and plans for the website in the future. Thank you to one and all who attended in particular IFA representatives Maura Canning and John Lynskey, TD John O Mahoney and Cllr Patsy O Brien.

We were very lucky to feature on the news last night on both TG4 and UTV Ireland Live. We had a great day filming with both crews and really enjoyed the experience. The camera men and presenters were very nice to us all and really put the nerves at ease! Have a look at us on the player functions of both chanels.

Our Makey Makey Banana Piano

Today we got our first makeymakey. First we used it in the senior room where we learned the basis behind the makeymakey system – how it is a substitute keyboard for the computer and how connecting via it you can use anything that conducts electricity to send your signals!!

We hooked up the makeymakey and bananas and ordered them in the order of the notes and directions on the piano. Everyone in the school had a turn. We were all in teams. It was great fun. We learned about the earth wire and saw how only the person holding it was able to play the notes.
