#teachmeetMayo #tmkids

On Friday 4th of March at 7pm Mayo hosted its first ever teach meet. Organised by Hassan, Caroline and Vivienne and held in Mayo Education Centre just one week after the CESI conference Teach Meet in Dublin, the crowds came from far and wide to attend the Castlebar Meeting. Hassan had been to our school for the Raspberry Jam back in December and when talking with Mrs Mangan asked us to showcase in what was to be Ireland FIRST #tmkids event. We set up in Castlebar at 6.30 and as the teachers filled into the meeting room, we were getting our laptops at the ready and our projects set up. Mrs Mangan had to go into the room to talk to all the teachers before they came out for the breakout (coffee break!) and then, the crowds came up the stairs and met us! Everyone was really nice and really cool, they all tried and tested out the things we had to show even one principal did 10 pushups which was in Cian and Camerons QR coded PE lesson while nearly all of them did squats and star jumps – they were great fun! We had 4 zones to show them different things, Cian and Cameron had QR codes showing them how easy it was to make them online, print them and use them…no major rocket science involved. They showed them the PE lesson we all made a few weeks ago for our own PE class and some maths, religion and english lessons and essays we wrote. next to them were Padraic and Mikey who were demonstrating the MAkey Makey and their latest project, an operation game coded through scratch! It was great fun and quite easy to make so I think there will be a board game company going out of business soon as lots of teachers are ready to go make them. They also showed the teachers their banana piano which everyone loved trying out!

The next table had myself and Nora showing the Raspberry pi with the camera attachment and telling them all about what was on the pi and how you could use it. I showed people my new website which I am making…..reminds me I forgot to tell Mags Amond that she gave me the idea for its name!!! Nora was great at telling everyone about the pi. On our last table Eva, Anna and Tiernan were showing everyone scratch, they had projects made, books and workcards on the table and some handouts as well.

We had an amazing evening and it was sooo cool seeing everyone taking part – teachers are cooler than they let us think!!! Dont just take my word for it here is some things people said about  us on twitter and there are even more on Mrs Mangans twitter feed! Thank you Mrs Mangan for bringing us, to all the teachers for being super working with us and to Hassan and his team for giving us the green light to do #tmkids – hopefully we will become trendsetters and lots of teachmeets will have a breakout like it!

Google CS first Club!

Today we signed up to learn Google CS Club with Scratch. The older classes know how to use scratch so they are all getting a buddy to mentor in CS Club! We are all very excited. It kick off next Friday – we have passports printed, laminated and ready to go for all the little buddies, we can’t wait to get going!!! Here is a little taster of what we are going to be doing!

Congratulations Padraic and Aoibheann

Congratulations to Padraic and Aoibheann in 4th class who won the Boots Maternity and Infant Magazine Young Achiever of the Year award in Dublin last week. QR Codes

Today we have been learning and working on QR Codes.  A QR Code is a type of barcode that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. We are creating them on the mac and using iphone and i pads to read them. You can use them on any internet devide to create them and read them with apps on most tablets and some laptops that have cameras. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text you want students to read, websites, or video.

Today we made QR codes for websites:

This is the code for our school website:

QR Code for our school website

This is the code for Padraic and Aoibheanns Farm Safety Website:

QR-Code for farm safety 4 kids.net

Next we made QR codes to hide text – we made a treasure hunt for the infant class. It was great fun they had to scan codes to find clues and eventually they found the treasure – a lovely stickers art kit for them to use for art this week!

Finally, we used QR codes to make our KWL chart for the work we are going to be doing on Norman castles this month. Click on the tab and see it!

Cian is National Scratch Champion 2015

Cian in first class won the national final of Scratch for Junior Infants to 1st Class in Dublin Castle on Thursday last. Cian made a game – Cians Frozen Game about 8+ tables. He had to present it to the judges in Dublin and then the public were allowed to come in and lots of people played his game. Everyone really loved it and one little girl said it was “addictive”. Cian also got to meet lots of other little and big coders from around Ireland and play lots of cool games. He was sitting beside a little boy Jack from Ballymun who had made the game Mutant Muinteoir, he was great fun. Mrs Mangan got to meet the teacher and kids from Lackamore NS who we are friends with on twitter. They are a small school too with only 20 pupils. They won a big prize on the day too! Small schools are mighty!!  Well done to all.

Eircom Junior Spider Award for www.farmsafety4kids.net

Padraic and Aoibheann were yesterday announced as winners of the Group Project of the eircom Junior Spider Awards for their project www.farmsafety4kids.net.

They went to Dublin with Mrs Mangan and Cian and Cameron went too. On the train they met Inver National school and the children from the Gaelscoil in Claremorris. When they got to Dublin they went to Facebook HQ in a mini bus taxi. In Facebook HQ they got to do lots of cool stuff like walking a tightrope, face painting, balloon making, a wind tunnel paper grab and a photo booth.  The photo booth was the best fun! Our teacher met our friends in St Peters in Bray and their teacher went in the photo booth with her!! The big kids from secondary school thought they were the coolest teachers ever…..!!!!

After a picnic lunch we had to go to the big room where the awards were to be presented. Mrs Mangan was filming the awards ceremony and she got such a shock and surprise  that she dropped the ipad onto her lap! We were amazed to win, its such an honour! Thanks to Eircom, to Facebook HQ, to all the junior spiders team and of course to everyone we met for such a great day!
